My entrepreneurial idea is based on building a self-serve frozen yogurt shop on Marshall Street. Too many days have I yearned for some frozen yogurt that didn't come out of a preserved container from the dining halls. Marshall Street has everything for the average, hungry college student from fried, greasy burgers to authentic Asian cuisine. Everything except for a decent frozen yogurt shop. Other places have already caught on to the yogurt craze such as Pinkberry, Menchie's, and Yogurtland. My desperation for a frozen yogurt shop could have come from my undying love for frozen goodness or my Floridian upbringing of being constantly surrounded by frozen yogurt shops. Or maybe the students of Syracuse University haven't yet experienced the joy of creating their own delicious, frozen creation. Either way, building a frozen yogurt shop will benefit the business, students, and my appetite.
The shop will be called The Frozen Orange (this is the best name I could come up with, please feel free to share your ideas). As you enter the shop, there will be a stack of disposable bowls for customers to grab. Then they will be led to a side of the shop where they can choose from six frozen yogurt machines, each containing two levers to pour out two different flavors, and a middle lever to mix the two flavors together. Next, the customers will be led to an aisle consisting of 70 different toppings ranging from candies, nuts, fruits, and syrups. After customers are done their creation, they will be guided to the cash register where they will weigh their yogurt on top of a scale. The scale will weigh in the yogurt, minus the weight of the bowl, by ounce and charge customers $0.40 per ounce. Drinks will also be available for purchase such as bottled water, milk, juices, iced tea, and sodas.
This frozen yogurt shop on Marshall street will benefit the college community's lack of frozen dairy, and create a fun experience for students who have never enjoyed self-serve frozen yogurt. This will also create an increase in business for other restaurants since customers will want to enjoy dinner and dessert. Overall, my entrepreneurial idea will satisfy the college community and Marshall street business.
I think that this idea would work well. You might have some competition from the frozen yogurt place within insomnia cookies. The other issue is that I am not sure if there would be a heck of a lot of business during the usual cold months, but in spring summer and fall, the place would probably do well.
ReplyDeleteMmmmm it sounds good! It hasn't been quite the case this winter, but usually around fall and winter season it's bitterly cold (From experience live close by) so perhaps the business could be closed during those seasons OR an even better idea! You could perhaps serve a warmer alternative( Ok, so warm yogurt doesn't sound too appealing...)but you could serve something else, a warm specialty so that you can also have business during the cold season.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a great idea and very delicious, although, it wouldn't benefit the lactose intolerant people. Also, where on Marshall Street would you place it because it is already very small and it might be a while before one of the shops there already go out of business. Don't get me wrong, it is a great idea, but there would be some complications making room for it.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great idea! I miss frozen yogurt bars from home too. Like others have said, frozen yogurt in the winter is not appealing to many in Syracuse, but I maybe you can create a hot chocolate bar so people can make their own unique hot chocolate combinations. You can have white, milk and dark chocolate creations and you can add different chocolate pieces to each. When it gets warmer out you can make them into frozen drinks.
ReplyDeleteI like this idea a lot! With frozen yogurt becoming increasingly popular, I've always wondered why there wasn't a business like it on Marshall street. I think Rachel raised a good point. A hot chocolate bar (maybe coffee as well?) would also be a great addition. Even though we've had a pretty mild winter so far (-knock on wood-), I know it does get bitterly cold in 'Cuse. At that point, people may not be as into frozen yogurt. Offering coffee or some other sort of 'warm' beverages could possible combat this issue. Aside from that, great job! I think this is a fantastic idea and something I would definitely love to see.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea! I've always wondered why there wasn't a froyo store on Marshall whenever i craved it. I think it would be a great money making venture as there isn't a Pinkberry or Red Mango in Syracuse. But as others have raised the concern, with the cold weather in Syracuse during winter time, it'd be smart to add items such as hot beverages and perhaps some simple and quick snacks. This is an awesome idea!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a perfect idea!! I am such an avid fan of frozen yogury and I hate that we don't have any here. Insomnia is ok but after a while it gets a little boring. I love that you don't have a structured menu and that people can add whatever they want to their frozen yogurt. I also like that you're adding fruit to the equation because I know there are a lot of people on campus who would really like a healthy alternative to all of the sugary products available at insomnia! Great idea!
